The common problem of a terrace house owner shared is narrow interior and cramped look due to the lack of light. Most resolutions the designer offered are forming light well by opening the ceiling and adding a greenery garden on the base.

On the other hand, Austin Maynard Architect offered a different solution for Newry House; a single-fronted terrace house in the inner-city of Melbourne. With a tight budget and packed spaces, the project Newry House was carried out by improving the home-life and the home-performances.

Livable interior approach

The main renovation begins from the middle part of the house with a lack of light as the problem. The open plan layout is applied nicely to solve this problem.

The wall separated the kitchen and dining room was demolished. It was followed by opening up spaces between the kitchen and the living room. The staircase, kitchen, and storage are combined into one object.

Moreover, the ceiling of the dining room is transformed into a large pitched glass roof with sliding awnings. It allows the natural light to overflow from one space to another. The responsive sliding awnings may be adjusted to several modes; remotely closed, partly, fully, or on one side. Therefore, the light wonderfully floods the spaces of the dining room, the kitchen, and the living room.

This lovely design does not stop there. Upholding the concept of a glasshouse, the indoor greenery garden is placed carefully at one side of the dining room. A bench is attached at the garden interconnected to the combination of the kitchen, the storage, and the staircase. To add a refreshing atmosphere, some plants in the pots are placed on the hanging shelf next to the raw wood cupboard.

In line with the garden vibes, the colors running over the interior follow earthy tones. The natural colors of the raw wood furniture combined with garden colors; red, blue, and green for the sofas, harmonically support this vibe. The perforated staircases also come with a twist color of vivid green at the top.
